Doboj

With its location at the key point on the rivers of Bosna, Usora and Spreča, Doboj is the largest railway hub in the country and the seat of Željeznice Republike Srpske (RS Railways, transl. note). The first official record of the settlement’s name dates back to 1415, and it was written in the Charter sent from Dubrovnik to the Hungarian Emperor Sigismund, even though numerous artefacts and items found prove that the area was inhabited in the early Iron Age, as well as the fact that the Roman Empire had a military camp (Casrum) and the settlement (Canabea) close to the town in the 1st century AD.

Doboj town is full of contrasts and variety. The best cultural evens are provided by Doboj fortress and Doboj Culture Centre. The famous International Tourism Festival – FESTTOUR is traditionally organised in June. On the Doboj fortress, you can visit an Ethno café, a playground for children, the exhibition of the medieval tools and weapons, take photos with the knights and princess, buy souvenirs and experience the medieval life in Bosnia for several minutes.

The place to go out at night is Zanatski centar (Crafts centre, transl. note), which is situated in Stadion quarter, in the centre of Doboj. There are numerous cafés, clubs, restaurants, saloons and betting shops in this rather small urban oasis.

A mixture of the Mediterranean and continental cuisine, hard and metal rock, turbo folk stars in their expansion, kebabs and other oriental  food, and all possible variety of beer and other beverages (local and international) are available in this place.

If you want to go for a swim, but also to enjoy good food, visit Goransko jezero (Goransko lake, transl. note), a small picnic area at 5 km from the centre of Doboj. It is clean, surrounded by the forest, and there is a restaurant, too. Another popular Doboj weekend resort – Preslica is in the neighbourhood, and it is ideal for family picnics with the restaurant that offers a variety of traditional dishes.

Both localities make part of Ozren Mountain, a hilly mountain-range where St Nicola’s monastery from the 13th century is also situated.
