The “Roman municipium” in Skelani
The “Roman municipium” in Skelani is one of the most important archaeological sites not only in Republic of Srpska, but also Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.
The city was located in the Roman province of Dalmatia, in the area rich not only in water but also minerals. It was a big city with palaces, richly decorated villas and other buildings.
This is confirmed by the three locations where archaeological research was conducted – Branko’s field, Anka’s yard and the Cooperative Centre. The most extensive research was conducted on Cooperative Centre site. There is a 900-sq-metre Roman villa rustica, which was discovered last year, in which he hypocaust i.e. underfloor heating was discovered.
