Šekovići through history
From the Roman period to the present day, Šekovici was a junction of important roads that linked the area east of the Drina with central Bosnia. Šekovići was named after one part of the residents, who settled in this area from Šekovine in Herzegovina in the late seventeenth century.
In the past, the Papraća and Lovnica monasteries were important centres of literacy and freedom. Ivan the Terrible’s mother, Elena Vasilyevna Glinskaya originated from Šekovići, which was cited as the reason for good relations between the Monastery Papraća and Russian imperial court.
