River Drina
The River Drina is considered one of the most beautiful rivers in the former Yugoslavia. In the past it was famous for its impetuous nature and rafters fighting its waterfalls. Due to its winding flow, there is the popular saying “don’t straighten the curvy Drina”, meaning that an effort is in vein. It was often that the river overflowed its banks and destroyed everything around. The River Drina is formed by the rivers Piva and Tara, in Šćepan field, and then its course, of a total length of 341 km, goes north up to the confluence with the River Sava.
So far, three hydro power plants have been built on the river, which have transformed a large part of its course into a lake-like surface. Unfortunately, there are no rafts and rafters any more but owing to artificial lakes tourists can take a boat trip on the river.
